I buy random stuff on DVD sometimes and I happened upon "RENT". As a play/musical junkie, I am surprised I have not tried to watch it before. My boyfriend said he was going to sing everything from now on, his way of saying there was WAY TOO MUCH singing. However I really liked it. I have listened to the soundtrack non-stop since last weekend when I watched it. If you haven't seen it and you are looking for something unique, check it out.

Hey Sarah!!! I totally love Rent (not paying it, WATCHING it) - I adore "Light My Candle", it's so much fun.

They've been playing it on cable quite a bit recently and I've been watching it every time it comes on! Love Puccini's operas (especially Madama Butterfly) and, as this is the La Bohème story retold, I truly do like it whole bunches.

Saw the stage show several years ago when they brought it to Nashville from Broadway. Ditto Miss Saigon -- the Butterfly story. Both were great! Indeed, if you haven't had a chance to see "Rent", check it out when you can.

Ok...first...lemme just say.... CARA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Long time no see buddy!

I was humming "Light My Candle" today at work. I play the soundtrack when I work in the file room (when not subbing for the schools I am an administrative assistant at the college my mom is at) but I have been in my own little office the last few days (Not mine really, but they stick me in there to do computer stuff now that they realized I am good at computer stuff) and there are no speakers on that computer!!! Plus some of the lyrics (especially in my favorite, La Vie Boheme) have words in them that shouldn't be blaring from a computer in the admissions office lol.

DP- I read Madama Butterfly with my Brit professor when we were learning to interpret lit and when he left town for a week instead of cancelling class he made us watch the video. It wasn't bad, but I blame the actors for its non-compellingness (yeah, I made that word up). Plus I was partial to the Kenneth Branagh interpretations of Shakespeare that we watched too. RENT is at the theater in Detroit starting Tuesday through next Sunday, but unlike Phantom of the Opera, I don't think the play version of RENT will get me. The commercials show clips and the actors don't look promising. The people in the movie are my embodiment of the characters now, no one else will work. (EDIT) Found the story I wanted to recommend to you DP, it is called M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang. It was paired in our Lit book with the original story and I found it quite interesting.

(Oh, and since I suggested a tv show in the other forum, I should add, do not watch Meerkat Manor and then go to sleep listening to the RENT soundtrack, you will have wierd dreams of Meerkats performing "Today for You, Tomorrow for Me" lol, I imagine that dream is like what an acid trip would be if I did drugs lol...)

Is that the one about a British diplomat that has an affair with a Chinese transvestite -- for years -- and doesn't know it (or claims not to)? Things come to a head when the Brit becomes embroiled in espionage intrigue and spilling secrets to "Butterfly" who is accused of being a secret agent -- or something to that effect. If so, they made a movie of it with John Lone as M. Butterfly and (I think) Jeremy Irons as the diplomat. It's been on cable several times -- can probably find it On Demand at this point -- but I've never had a chance to watch the whole thing. Never seems to come on at a convenient time...

Hiiiiii Sarah sweetie!! Indeed, a very long time! Sorry I'm late - I was so concetrating on the convention threads I neglected other stuff like this.

I've never seen M. Butterfly, but I think you're right or very close to right, Mama Hen.

I ADOOOOOOOOORE the opera Madame Butterfly - wow is all can say, it's absolutely stunning and moving.

"...I should have told you.." about "...a year in the life..." (And about how the soundtrack will make you crazy -- unless you quick find something else to listen to!)
